American Gladiators Revival

People are a buzz about the latest old show to make a comeback. People of all ages have enjoyed watching the Classic battle of strength between our American Gladiators and the average contestant. The original “American Gladiators” series ran for almost ten years from 1989 to 1996. After watching the series last night it was clear the contestants were all prepared to battle against the Gladiators. Supplements like creatine , or protein shakes clearly helped them attain the muscular physiques!

Common Off-Season Mistakes

Bodybuilders take time away from the sport just like everybody else with a career. With that being said, bodybuilders need to keep their body in good shape so that they do not undo all of their hard work. Of course, this is easier said than done during an off-season break or vacation. There are many common mistakes that are made in this area. Some of the more popular include: not eating enough of the good foods, not keeping up with a cardio workout, and staying away from carbs. If you are interested in being the best possible bodybuilder, you need to work hard year round. This is not to say that you can never take a break, but when you do, you must still have the best interest of your body in mind.

Bulking Season

Countdown to 2008 is underway. The Bulking Season is around the corner! The weather is cold, the midriff is covered… this is the season to bulk up. Breaking up the year into a bulking up season and a cutting up season enables you to make gains that you would never be able to make by trying to do both at the same time.

Workouts: Cardiovascular endurance is very important for your overall health. But the sheer amount of calories it consumes can get in the way of a bulking up program. The solution is to make your cardio workouts short but intense. Sprints on your favorite exercise equipment are in order. Another solution is to occasionally skip the cardio portion of your workout in favor of a heart-pounding strength training session. The key to this is to move from exercise to exercise with little to no rest between. It works out your heart as well as surprises your muscles. Any change in your workout will increase your gains.

Most importantly, change your strength training sessions to utilize the extra calories and nutrition. Regularly change your routine, and in general, concentrate more on heavy weights and less on reps.

Diet: As appealing as it is to turn the bulking up season into a cheat season… resist the temptation! The goal is to gain muscle, but if that goal is accomplished with a good amount of fat you will be doing a huge disservice to yourself when spring rolls around. Instead, take this opportunity to not only bulk up on muscle, but the nutrition that you may have cut back on during the summer. Load up on the fruits and vegetables that were possibly excluded before… sweet potatoes, berries, oranges, kiwi, pomegranate juice.. Include produce from all spectrums of the rainbow to ensure a broad range of vitamins and antioxidants.

Finally, increase your Protein intake to 1.5 grams of protein per pound of body weight. A two hundred pound man would, thus, need to consume 300 grams of lean protein. Since this is such a huge amount, it’s very important to break it up into 7-8 meals. Any more protein than that in one sitting would be detrimental to your goals.

UK Couple Team up for NPA

As reported in the Shields Gazette, a South Tyneside, England, fitness instructor and her partner are flexing their muscles in defence of their title. From the article:

Workers' Educational Association (WEA) tutor Lesley Haswell and Dale Wilson are currently the British champions in the couples section of the Natural Physique Association's (NPA) bodybuilding championships. The bodybuilding duo are hoping to walk away from this year's competition in Canvey Island, Essex, with their title intact.

"Mum-of-two" Ms. Haswell is also hoping to win the under 55kg weight section, while 28-year-old manager Mr. Wilson is aiming for top place in the middle-weight section.

And Ms. Haswell, 39, from Fulwell, is also competing in a fitness section in the United Kingdom Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation tomorrow. She leads a WEA fitness course in pilates at the Centre for the Community in Robinson Street, South Shields, every Wednesday morning.

Ms. Haswell also runs her own business, Physique Management, offering sport and remedial therapy, care for sports injuries and one-to-one fitness training. She is sponsored by Netrx and by her gym, Fitness 2000.

She added: "I was thrilled to find organisations which require members to be drug-free to compete. It's just all sheer hard work, grit and determination. At the moment, I'm in training for the British Championship and dieting to keep within the weight limit."

All in the Family: 5 Sisters "Get Their Sexy Back"

Keeping Workouts in the Family

race220.jpgOne of the best ways to stick to an exercise program is to have a workout buddy. These two families have found that when it comes to workout buddies, it's the family ties that keep them together.

“I was not an athletic type and I was never around girls who were into athletics,” said Cala, 67. “When my oldest daughter, Jeanie, was born, I bought her dolls and clothes and feminine things like ironing boards. She ignored them and then it dawned on me. She excels in sports and that defines her. I started encouraging her.”

Married couple Billy and LeQuida Sanders are one of the few husband-wife bodybuilding couples in the Southeast. They competed in Mississippi Bodybuilding and Figure Championships at Thalia Mara Hall in Jackson. They work out twice a day Monday through Saturday -- cardiovascular for 45 minutes in the morning followed by a two-hour workout in the evening. Sunday's session consists of cardio only. Apparently, they have found the right formula. Billy and LeQuida won the overall titles at the NPC Southern Cup in Bossier City, La., in May.

A Dream Come True for Liberatore

Caissie Liberatore won the women’s heavyweight and women’s overall provincial championships recently at the Nova Scotia Bodybuilding Competition in Halifax after ten years of hard work, as reported in  Dedication to bodybuilding pays dividends for Liberatore.  

The article continues:

"Liberatore also won the 2004 women’s heavyweight title in New Brunswick. She was confident going into the provincial competition this year that she would come out a champion.

"'I had a goal in mind and I stuck to my guns,' she said. 'I knew where I wanted to go and I knew how to get there.'"

Even in Iraq, a BodyBuilder Wins

Wesley__7_.jpg You'd think he'd have plenty to do to keep him busy over there. But not only is he in his seventh month of a year-long deployment in Iraq, but Sgt. Gordon Wesley still maintains the discipline and schedule to come away with the “U.S. Forces Bodybuilding Championships” Heavyweight title.

MilitaryNews.com tells us:

"After years of dedication to the sport and months training for this contest, Wesley's hard work ethic and determination beat out 24 other competitors to earn the right to be called 'Champion.'
   
"Training for an event like this takes time Wesley said. 'It doesn't happen overnight. The key to training is to be patient, learn what your body can take, and then go to the extreme of those limits.'"
    
Wesley's regime includes dieting, weight training, a lot of cardio, and the external motivation of two of his workout partners and another close friend.  Wesley also cites his supervisors for allowing him to compete in this competition as well as his family and friends that have motivated him to be successful.

When Your Dad Is More Buff than You Are

Filmmaker looks at his father’s obsession with bodybuilding tells the story of Bryan and his father Bill Friedman, man of steel. 

"In The Bodybuilder and I, Friedman enters into his father’s world with hopes of understanding Bill's obsession and growing closer to him.

"Friedman sees the extensive training his father undergoes with weight lifting and bench presses -- all part of his daily dose of strain.

"The filmmaker follows his dad to learn what’s crucial when preparing for the competition. Bryan looks on while Bill goes on a shopping expedition for brown-rice cakes – part of his strict diet -- selects the 'right' soundtrack for his routine, 'bakes' in front of hot tanning lights and practises stripping down to his custom-made Superman costume.

"What Friedman discovers is the time and energy his father devotes to bodybuilding and becomes irritated by it. Old resentment starts to resurface. Why didn’t his dad devote time and energy to him?

"Through interviews with family members, Friedman brings to light the issues he has with his father."

Sounds like an interesting film, for bodybuilders, and for anyone who's got a dad.

49-year-old Bodybuilder Testo Still Going Strong

"russt3.JPGRuss Testo, once Mr. Capital District, now teaches posing techniques, praising God with every rock-hard pose he teaches," reports Flexing his faith from the TimesUnion.com. 

At 49, Testo is decades beyond the days he competed as a bodybuilder, but his physique is in competition shape. He looks the part in a sport where looks are everything. But, as it has been from the beginning, there's more to Testo's bodybuilding work than that, something bigger than bulging biceps.

"What drew me to it was the art of it. I'd say I liked the posing; the posing part was always the best part for me. I love looking at the posing. I didn't see it as a macho thing. I didn't see it as a 'look at me' thing; I saw it for the beauty of it," says Testo, who has a degree in communications and once worked in television and radio. "I guess I've always believed that (God) blessed me with this gift to pose. ... Yeah, I've dieted hard, and I've worked hard, but the ability to do that comes from God."

Today, Testo makes a living by choreographing for bodybuilders, doing a few guest posing engagements like one this month in Seattle, and partnering with Cindi Stone in a personal training business called Sonshine Fitness, based at Best Fitness in Albany.

American beefcake actor in the Cape to thrill reports that Catanzaro relies on discipline and hard work to achieve his results. 

"Catanzaro has appeared in movies such as Carlito's Way, The Scout and Batman: Gothic. He is also well known on television for his cameos in shows such as Sex And The City, Saturday Night Live and Law & Order and as a guest on talkshows Rikki Lake, Phil Donahue and Good Morning America, among others. The 36-year-old New Yorker is well known in the fitness world, having won numerous awards: the 2005 Natural New York City Middle-Weight bodybuilding competition; he was first runner-up in 2003 Fame America Model Universe; 2002 New York State Bodybuilding Middleweight winner and overall champion; and Mr Fitness in 1997."

Inspiring Seniors

There's one thing you should never retire from, and that's good fitness--as these seniors know.

Here's something a much younger person might find hard to do. "Dorothy Ralph has run the two fitness clubs in Norwich for the past 43 years, but at the ripe old age of 85 has decided it is time for someone younger to put her pupils through their paces and is hanging up her headband at Easter," writes Peter Walsh from the Norwich Evening News. Applicants for the job can contact Dorothy.

And, in 88 Year-Old Woman Wins Weightlifting Competition, you can learn about Andora Quinby. At 88, Quinby holds the world record in her age group for dead lifting 100 pounds and is the oldest female competing in the International All Around Weight Lifting Association. As Quinby says, I have "very little competition." Quinby started lifting when she was 78. Now a decade later she's hoping the attention she's getting will encourage others to pick up a bar.

Fitness Phenom: Nathalie Mulder

nathaliemulderclips.jpgIn No Damsel in Distress, Nathalie Mulder says, "I'm not one of those girls that's going to back down and push light weight just because a guy is staring at me to see how much I can push. I know I can push more than you, sorry."

A mere five years ago, Nathalie was overweight. Three months at the gym didn't change anything, until she changed her diet as well. Career Profile: Phillip Heath

Mickey Hargitay, Hungarian-born Bodybuilder and Film Star

mickeyhargitay16thumb.jpgThe world mourns the loss of Mickey Hargitay, world-renowned bodybuilder and father of Emmy Award-winning actress Mariska Hargitay.

The Los Angeles Times obituary recounts how Hargitay helped make bodybuilding a credible sport in this country. He was the inspiration for a generation of up-and-coming athletes, including Arnold Schwarzeneggar.

The story reports: "For a young Arnold Schwarzenegger, the fact that Hargitay had won the Mr. Universe contest was an 'inspirational force.' 'Bodybuilding was dominated by American bodybuilding champions; there was no hope for anyone else,' the California governor told The Times on Monday. That someone from central Europe became Mr. Universe, he said, gave 'hope for someone like myself and others to dream about that.'

"'When I came to this country in 1968, he was one of the first people I wanted to meet,' said Schwarzenegger, recalling Hargitay's advice to not 'come over here for a handout, contribute, and with hard work you can achieve things.'"

Asian Bodybuilding & Fitness Championships

81.jpgMore than 95 men and women from Asia participated in the Asian Bodybuilding & Fitness Championships 2006, held in Vietnam this year, reports The Saigon Times Daily.

Athletes from India, China, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Mongolia, Malaysia, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Vietnam competed in 18 different weight categories in the event.

Host Vietnam dominated with five gold medals, two silvers, and a bronze. Thailand followed with three golds and three bronzes, and Singapore was third with two gold, four silver, and two bronze medals.

Vietnam's Nguyen Thi My Linh (pictured) clinched the gold medal in the women’s 52-kilogram, and Trinh Phi Hung won the champion in the age group of over 50 years in the second day of the event.

Finding the Strength to Compete Again

Paul O'Lone, a former national amateur bodybuilding champion, has a promising career ahead of him after winning the Mr. North America contest in 1993. Then multiple sclerosis (MS), a debilitating disease that can make difficult the everyday task of walking, changed O'Lone's life forever. But after 13 years of uncertainty, O'Lone found his wife, Judy Luu, to be the encouragement he needed to compete again. With her help, and his determination, O'lone will stand strong as a hopeful in tonight's San Jose Bodybuilding Fitness and Figure Championship.

"MS hasn't stopped him" reports The Mercury News. "'There was a time when bodybuilding meant being the biggest, most defined guy,' said O'Lone, [. . .] 'But now it is being healthy and being the best I can be with MS.'" O'Lone, "with 173 rock-hard pounds on a 5-foot-9 frame--his body fat is 5 percent--O'Lone likes his chances tonight." But whatever the outcome of tonight's competition, O'Lone is already an inspiration for bodybuilders with disabilities and for people who need to find the strength to achieve their personal best.

Carol Taylor a Growing Success

Carol-Taylor.gifCarol Taylor, 39, shown here, is proof that it's never too late to reach for a dream career. She quit smoking this year, intensified her weight training, and got competitive. Not only that, she's surprised at how quickly she is rising to the top of her game as a world-class figure in women's Figure bodybuilding competitions.

A mother of two and a hairdresser, Carol's becoming a first-rate bodybuilder is unexpected. Happy with her success, she calls it "a life-changing experience" in a Bedford News report that says "Carol's in Shape for Top Title." Carol is also first-class inspiration to everyone as she challenges herself and others, by example, to set new goals and personal bests. She has demonstrated that the only difference between dreams and reality is a go-for-it attitude.

Bodybuilding at 40 and 50

Going strong--really strong--at 40 and even 50 plus-years-old, competitive bodybuilders like Justin Sompong, Malaysia, and Ly Duc, Vietnam, are an inspiration to us all. Justin Sompong, former Mr. Asia, is making a well-built comeback at 54 with an ambition that is as big as he is: "To revive the sport's glory both at national and international levels." Sompong says, "I'm in better shape than ever after two years of intensive training and preparation." As for Ly Duc, he will not be representing Vietnam in the 15th ASIAD. While "according to many experts, Ly Duc, at 41, is not too old for bodybuilding, especially as he is still in good shape." And having "worked out every day with the national team," and "helping the coaching board to teach other athletes as an assistant," Duc has inspired and continues to inspire athletes of all ages, all over the world.

Mass. doctor wins bodybuilding competition

At 41, Dr. Joe DeMarco recently beat out some much younger competitors to take home the middleweight title in the Mr. Massachusetts Bodybuilding contest.  A chiropractor in Rowley, Mass., DeMarco is an expert on diet, nutrition, and fitness, and credits knowledge with helping him succeed.

Was the competition surprised that this veteran bodybuilder stole the show?

"I guess you could say some of them were surprised, but others got a kick out of it seeing this older guy coming in and doing so well," said the affable DeMarco. "I was nervous getting back into it after an eleven year layoff, but then again, I have been involved with lifting and fitness for over thirty years of my life, so getting prepared wasn’t an issue."
    

 


 

In the months leading up to the competition, DeMarco stuck to a strict regimen of a disciplined diet and three hour workout sessions all while seeing clients throughout the day. This process is made easier by the fact his practice and his gym are located in the same Rowley facility. He also continually reads up on the latest in wellness and nutrition, and with a collegiate background in gymnastics and his degree in exercise science, you might say there has always been a competitive advantage.

Jack LaLanne: Living healthy at 91

After a lifetime of strict discipline Jack LaLanne isn’t about to quit.  He swims and lifts weights every morning in addition to eating a healthy diet of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean meats.

LaLanne wasn’t always a fitness fanatic:

At 15, young Jack was 30 pounds underweight, a self-professed troublemaker who had dropped out of school. But attending a lecture by Paul Bragg, considered by some to be a founding father of the health-food movement, changed him overnight.

He became a strict vegetarian, gave up all sweets and joined the Berkeley YMCA to work out.

"I was the laughingstock," he says. "But I didn't give up."

All that led to a successful morning exercise show on TV that opened the doors to dozens of imitators in the past half-century.

Despite this herd effect and LaLanne's audience followings, two-thirds of Americans are still overweight or obese. And he's frustrated by those who don't take care of themselves.
