A Few Spring Tips for Your Bodybuilding Snacks- Protein Bars

•Make sure you don’t leave your Protein Bar on your car seat! The rising temperature inside the car can melt away the delicious coating. You may find your hand covered in melted chocolate if you rip into bar that has been sitting in the sun. Keeping your bar in the cool air will help keep the bar fresh. •Check the expiration date on your supplement bars. Some do expire! •Buy in Bulk- Save money by buying your bars in bulk. •Display your nutrition bars on your counter and you may find it easier to grab one and eat healthier than grabbing a cookie from the cookie jar on the counter. •Purchase a Nutritional Bar with nutritional value, low in saturated fat- read the labels. If the internet retailer does not display the nutritional facts- beware and don’t purchase the bars. View image

One scientist may have found another clue as to why SOY helps promote weight loss .
Current research shows that when soy consumption is up, body weight decreases!
"And we found that soy did have an effect on these mechanisms and hormones that are induced in the body to help us degrade lipids and reduce body weight, but it did so by boosting metabolism and not by reducing food intake," she said.

New Generation of Bodybuilding Supplements

With all of the negative talk about steroids in sports, it is about time that something good comes about. There is a new generation of bodybuilding supplements that are becoming quite popular among online retailers. These Pro-steroids are more or less a natural variation of illegal steroid supplements. As you can imagine, these have become very popular among both amateurs as well as those who are hoping to take their career to the next level.

While Pro-steroids are walking a fine line between legal and illegal, they have been around in some form for many years. For instance, androstenedione became very popular during the late 1990’s and is still widely used for the best performance.

It will be interesting to see if these drugs, such as Permadrol stick around or are simply a fad.

Bulking Season

Countdown to 2008 is underway. The Bulking Season is around the corner! The weather is cold, the midriff is covered… this is the season to bulk up. Breaking up the year into a bulking up season and a cutting up season enables you to make gains that you would never be able to make by trying to do both at the same time.

Workouts: Cardiovascular endurance is very important for your overall health. But the sheer amount of calories it consumes can get in the way of a bulking up program. The solution is to make your cardio workouts short but intense. Sprints on your favorite exercise equipment are in order. Another solution is to occasionally skip the cardio portion of your workout in favor of a heart-pounding strength training session. The key to this is to move from exercise to exercise with little to no rest between. It works out your heart as well as surprises your muscles. Any change in your workout will increase your gains.

Most importantly, change your strength training sessions to utilize the extra calories and nutrition. Regularly change your routine, and in general, concentrate more on heavy weights and less on reps.

Diet: As appealing as it is to turn the bulking up season into a cheat season… resist the temptation! The goal is to gain muscle, but if that goal is accomplished with a good amount of fat you will be doing a huge disservice to yourself when spring rolls around. Instead, take this opportunity to not only bulk up on muscle, but the nutrition that you may have cut back on during the summer. Load up on the fruits and vegetables that were possibly excluded before… sweet potatoes, berries, oranges, kiwi, pomegranate juice.. Include produce from all spectrums of the rainbow to ensure a broad range of vitamins and antioxidants.

Finally, increase your Protein intake to 1.5 grams of protein per pound of body weight. A two hundred pound man would, thus, need to consume 300 grams of lean protein. Since this is such a huge amount, it’s very important to break it up into 7-8 meals. Any more protein than that in one sitting would be detrimental to your goals.

Importance of OMEGA-3-FATTY ACIDS

The American Heart Association released another report this week reminding us all of the benefits of eating fish at least twice a week. While most bodybuilders are aware of the importance of protein and OMEGA-3-FATTY ACIDS, it is also important to stress that every single one of us can benefit from Fish Oil.

Your body cannot make these types of fat. In order to achieve optimal results it is NECCESSARY to add the appropriate amounts of extra oils to your daily diet. It is not surprising that most people do not obtain an adequate amount of fatty acids.

In addition to helping maintain a cut appearance, fish oil may also keep you from becoming depressed. Omega 3's are great for your joints and will help you them from becoming inflamed from hardcore training.

An additional study released this month also indicated that that Fish Oil Can Also Help Lupus!

What are you waiting for! Add it to your diet today!

Is Alternative Medicine Good for You?

Can alternative medicine be beneficial? Here's some information in this sampling of articles.

Alternative Medicine Myths Exposed

More than a third of American adults reported having used some form of complementary and alternative medicine, at the time of the survey. But which are safe? Which effective? Which are compatible with textbook medicine? Myths and misconceptions abound.

Holistic medicine has a place

"I have first-hand knowledge of why patients seek holistic (aka alternative, complementary, unconventional) care. At times, it is because they have a strong philosophical preference for natural treatments. But mostly, it is because the conventional treatments they have received have simply not gotten the job done."

Test alternative treatments

Many patients strongly believe that these kinds of therapies work. The conventional view among doctors is that they probably don't do much good -- and they may cause harm. In most cases, neither opinion is based on science.

Three articles highlight the benefits of supplements for longevity, muscle-building and beauty.

Vitamin D Supplements: They may help you live longer

Vitamin D is a bit of a Cinderella in the world of supplements -- and yet it is the one that could help you live longer. People who regularly take a vitamin D supplement increase their longevity by 7 per cent, researchers have discovered.

Top Muscle-Building Supplements

Given the array of body-bulking powders, pills and shakes on the market, it's hard to know which one might work best, let alone just plain work. And aren't most of these products really made for professional athletes? The truth is, many experts say, supplements aren’t necessary for building muscle, but some can give casual athletes a boost in muscle mass and energy.

Take a one-a-day approach to beauty

Are you taking an inside-out approach to beauty? You know that nourishing your mind, body and spirit enhances your natural glow; what's surprising is that scientists now say it's worth adding supplements to your diet, exercise, and skin routine.

Supplements Good for the Bones

Two new reports highlight how supplements can help with certain health concerns regarding bones.

Taking calcium supplements does reduce risk of fractures

A new study has analyzed data from 17 studies, involving 52,625 people older than 50 (average age, 68) who had been randomly assigned to take calcium, usually combined with vitamin D, or a placebo daily. During an average of 3 1/2 years, 6,543 people sustained a hip or vertebral fracture. Those who took calcium alone or combined with vitamin D were 12 per cent less likely to have broken a bone than were people who took the placebo; those who took the supplements most consistently, however, had 24 per cent fewer breaks.

Glycine Supplements Prevent Degenerative Diseases

The amino acid glycine can help prevent degenerative diseases such as osteoporosis and arthrosis, according to a new Spanish study. In addition, the study found that glycine supplementation may be required by most people because of the body’s limited ability to synthesize it.

Fish Oil Has Many Benefits

fish oil.jpg Two new studies extol the virtues of fish oil supplements.

First, from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition comes a report that both aerobic exercise and use of fish-oil supplements benefit cardiovascular health. As reported in Fish Oil Supplements May Reduce Body Fat, "Researchers followed 75 overweight adults for three months. Some took six grams of fish oil, or omega-3 fatty acid supplements daily and some walked 45 minutes three days a week and took fish oil. Still, others did a combination of sunflower oil supplements and exercise. Those who took the fish oil alone or coupled with exercise improved their cholesterol levels, blood vessel function and reduced their bodyfat."

Next, Fish Oil Pills For Heart Attack Victims reports that in the UK, "Heart attack victims are to be prescribed fish oil and advised to follow a Mediterranean diet under new health guidelines published today." The supplement prescription would be especially for those patients who do not care for eating actual oily fish.

Benefits of Supplements Often Overlooked

images2.jpg The Edmonton Journal brings us this article about supplements:

Critics of health supplements overlook long history of benefits

The article says in part: "Since the mid-1900s, health supplements, and health food stores that sell them, have been repeatedly attacked and labelled as "worthless" by regulatory bodies and scientific or medical authorities. But why then has their popularity continued to blossom and grow to this day? The answer is simple: Results speak louder than theory. If a product, whether natural or pharmaceutical, produces desirable results, it doesn't matter what the medical literature says or what studies exist, people will likely continue to use it."

Potassium Citrate Helps Fight Osteoporosis

It's long been known that older women are at risk for osteoporosis. Now, there's evidence to suggest that potassium citrate supplements can help turn this around.

This is because potassium counteracts the high acidity of the modern diet. "Our results demonstrate for the first time that merely by partially reversing the acidity of the diet, bone mass increased rapidly and in amounts that are within the range of increases produced by common FDA-approved medicines," comments Dr. Reto Krapf of the University of Basel, Switzerland (reported in Base Supplements May Help Fight Osteoporosis on Medical News Today).

Since all of the approved medications for osteoporosis or low bone mass have serious side effects or safety warnings, this may be the best time to get your mom to consider supplements.

However, no illegal drugs were involved, nor was there any intention on Owens' part to harm himself. He was apparently made groggy by a combination of natural supplements and perscribed painkillers.

Amino Acid Advances

ScientistLive.com reports on artificial amino acids:

"Bengt Mannervik’s research team at Uppsala University [Sweden] has now demonstrated that artificial amino acids can be exchanged for a natural one that is critical to the stability and catalytic properties of the protein. The study opens the possibility of a new chemical biology where entirely new properties can be custom made for biotechnological applications."

The study is apparently the molecular equivalent of a hip joint operation, where the natural joint is replaced by an artificial part that is more robust. Using simple chemistry, the twenty amino acids from nature can be exchanged for hundreds of new chemical structures, thereby creating proteins with building blocks far beyond the limits of the genetic code.

Inulin, Oligofructose Good for Your Bones

NUTRAIngredients.com reports that a new study out of Brazil confirms that supplementing the diet with the soluble dietary fibres inulin and oligofructose boosted calcium absorption in rats by about 40%, results that add to an ever growing body of science linking the prebiotics with improved bone health.

The study, published in the current issue of the journal Nutrition Research, concluded: "Assuming that the fracture risk results from a progressive loss of bone mass in adulthood and that this loss is lower in people that formed bone mass more effectively in childhood and adolescence, [inulin and oligofructose] may be regarded as a food component with bone health enhancer property to early ages."
